Term Definition
equation A number sentence that uses the equal sign = to show that two expressions have the same value. A mathematical statement composed of algebraic and/or numeric expressions set equal to each other
Ex: 9 + 3 = 12
variable A letter that stands for a number.
number sentence 3 + 5 = 8
20 – 5= 15
2 x 3 =6
8 / 4 = 2
inverse operations Operations that cancel or undo each other. The oppisite.
Example: Adding a 6 and subtracting 6: multiplying 4 and dividing 4
operation The math you do. +, -, x, or dividing.
isolate to get a variable (letter) by itself.
expression a mathematical phrase, with no equal sign or comparison symbol, that may contain a number(s), an unknown(s), and/or an operator(s)
equivalent Numbers that are the same.
Same size, same shape, same number. Congruent
sum The answer to addition

quotient The answer to division
rule Shows how numbers on a table are related.
Shows if the numbers are increasing or decreasing
x + 3 = y
input/output table A table that uses a rule to. Shows numbers increasing or decreasing by the same amounts.
solution The answer.
The value of of the variable
fraction Shaded/total. A number in the form a/b , A fraction can be used to name part of an object, part of a set of objects, to compare two quantities, or to represent division
numerator The top number of a fraction, the shaded part. The part of a fraction written above the fraction bar that tells the number of fractional parts specified or being considered
denominator the bottom number of a fraction. The total part. The part of a fraction written below the fraction bar that tells the total number of equal parts in a whole or set
equivalent fractions equal fractions like 1/2 =2/4 =3/6=4/8=5/10
unit fractions A fraction with a numerator of 1
simplest form A fraction than can not be made smaller. The numerator and denominator have no common factors.
Input-output table a table which represents how the application of a rule on a value, input, results in a different value, output
Input position in the sequence. The x.
Output value in the sequence. The y
Factor a number multiplied by another number to find a product
