equation A number sentence that uses the equal sign = to show that two expressions have the same value. A mathematical statement composed of algebraic and/or numeric expressions set equal to each other
Ex: 9 + 3 = 12
variable A letter that stands for a number.
number sentence 3 + 5 = 8
20 – 5= 15
2 x 3 =6
8 / 4 = 2
inverse operations Operations that cancel or undo each other. The oppisite.
Example: Adding a 6 and subtracting 6: multiplying 4 and dividing 4
operation The math you do. +, -, x, or dividing.
isolate to get a variable (letter) by itself.
expression a mathematical phrase, with no equal sign or comparison symbol, that may contain a number(s), an unknown(s), and/or an operator(s)
equivalent Numbers that are the same.
Same size, same shape, same number. Congruent

product The answer to multiplication. the total when two or more factors are multiplied,
quotient The answer to division
rule Shows how numbers on a table are related.
